2.2 Analyze text that uses the compare-and-contrast organizational pattern
(6) 1. Everything we experience in the
world is subject to analysis by noting similarities and differences.
a) When we notice the sameness of
two or more persons, places, things or ideas, we say we are making
comparisons.
b) By the very nature and character of language, we
consider things to be subject to comparison if they possess similar
distinguishing characteristics, yet they are not identical.
c) When things are not identical, yet possess similar
characteristics, we may also point out distinguishing differences between them
through the use of contrast.
d) Similar things are therefore capable of both
comparison and contrast at one and the same time.

Instructional Objectives
-
After reading a selection replete with
similarities and differences between characters, settings and themes, students will be able to
make comparisons and distinguish contrast elements utilizing Venn Diagrams to
organize each process.
-
After further analysis, students will be able to
post their collected data into a mind map utilizing INSPIRATION web charting
tools.
-
Students will be able to distinguish between
major and minor personality traits, and the contrasting effects of tone and mood
upon setting and theme.
-
After review and further reorganization, students will be able to
demonstrate their acquired skills of comparative analysis through participation
in a software generated assessment test.
-
Students will be able to identify
compare/contrast methods as demonstrated in a Power Point
multimedia presentation.
-
Students will be able to present
their acquired skills in sixth grade compare/contrast literary organization standards in a Power Point multimedia presentation to an audience of peers
and adults.
-
Students will be able to write,

Student Activities
Students will learn to organize an assigned
reading selection according to both common and distinguishing
characteristics.
Introductory
Activity
The teacher will demonstrate the strategies
and methods available for identifying similarities of and differences between
personality traits of the characters in a reading selection. To help the student
gain the necessary knowledge required for performing each step, the
teacher will utilize a Power Point
multimedia presentation defining the concepts and identifying the methods.
Enabling Activities
Students will outline the story line
of an assigned reading selection, noting differences and similarities between
personality traits of the main characters. Utilizing their outlines, they will
identify and post both similar and contrasting characteristics they have
discovered into a Venn diagram. Culminating
Activity
Students will be record, edit, revise, and
publish their findings on the sixth grade compare/contrast literary
organization
standards using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation
