You will successfully complete these lessons if you carefully read and follow all of the  directions for each day.  The lessons will take you through the reading of the book, the understanding of the concepts presented, the searching of the world wide web for information, and the final cooperative group presentation of your information using Power Point.  Be sure to keep all hard copies of your work as you will need them to put together your final Power Point presentation on your views of preserving and prolong life.

Activities

Day 1

Classroom Activity: 1)  Fill out the "what I know" section of the KWL chart.  2)  Pretest on ten vocabulary words used in the story and personal attitudes about whether you would make any changes if you could relive your life.  3) Discussion on pretest.    4)Fill out the "what I want to know"  section of the KWL chart.  

Homework:  Dictionary work, find the ten vocabulary words and list their definitions.  Use each word correctly in a sentence.

 

Day 2

Classroom Activity:  

1) Read Dr. Heidegger's Experiment.

Day 3

Classroom Activity:  Go on the World Wide Web to research Nathaniel Hawthorne, the author of Dr. Heidegger's Experiment.  Use your research information to write a one paragraph report on him.

Day 4

Classroom Activity:  1) Go on the World Wide Web to research the Fountain of Youth.  Write a one paragraph essay on the Fountain of Youth.

2) Click here to get a printable copy of the worksheet on the Literary Theme.  Complete the worksheet. 

 

Day 5

Classroom Activity:  Click here to get a printable copy of the worksheet that will help develop an essay on Youth and Aging.  Complete the worksheet.  Use the answers to write a short essay about youth and aging.  Structure your essay so that you answer these questions:  How does society value youth and old age?  What might be a healthier attitude toward aging?  Have a classmate proofread your essay.

Homework:  Proofread your essay and bring it to final draft form so that you can type it using Microsoft Word.

 

Day 6

Classroom Activity:  

1) Type your essay using Microsoft Word.

Day 7

Classroom Activity:  Receive direct instruction on creating a presentation using Power Point.  Review all worksheets, web searches, and story information as you create your Power Point presentation.  Be sure to answer the question: If you were old, would you choose to be young again?

 

Day 8-10

1) Post test on vocabulary words.

2) Fill out the "what I learned" part of the KWL chart.

3) Present your Power Point creation.
