Getting Started

Let us learn about what all life is made of.  Cells are the small units which can be a living thing or it can be part of a more complicated organism.   The activities describe in this page are important as it will guide you to learn more about cell structures and organelles.   You also learn to prepare a multimedia presentation using one of the most important software of our time, PowerPoint.

you are made out ell students how to navigate through activities. Then, design a relevant, interesting, and/or attention getting introductory activity. Give directions for introductory activity.

Activities

You will follow the activities on this web page.

Day 1

The first day you will be taking a pretest on the cell.  This is important to see what you know already about the cell and its structures.  You will answer using a Scantron sheet 50 questions on the cell.   You will need a number 2 pencil and you will be provided with a Scantron and test with the test questions.

Please try to do your best because you will be tested after the conclusion of the activities described in this web page.

After the test you will use a  KWL form  to write on the first column what you know about the most common cell parts and organelles.  You will use 4 pages to write 4 cell parts to a page.  After writing about what you know about the parts you will use the second column to write questions on what you want to learn about the cell part.  The last part of the chart you will leave it blank until the end of the activities when you will fill in what you learned about each part and organelle.

Day 2

Students will learn to surf the Internet using search engines. Teacher during class will instruct students on the use of search engines to search for information. Students will practice looking for information using the following search engines:  www.altavista.com, www.google.com, www.37.comwww.37.com has 37 search engines available for searching. Students submit keywords into search engine and review pages for relevant and interesting information.  Students can use the resources on this web site.  Go to resources

Classroom Activity:  Internet search activity.

Day 3-4

Students will read chapter 5-6  Modern Biology (Holt, Rinehart and Winston '93 edition) or other textbooks on cell structure and function.  Students will read and take notes on the structure and function of  cells parts and organelles.  Students will also take notes on the levels of organization.   Students fill in the information requested by the worksheets which can be downloaded ( Worksheet Cell parts functions (PDF) and cell parts drawings (PDF) both worksheets in Word ) if a handout is not available in the classroom.  These forms present a series of statements that student need to answer or fill in and a cell model students need to recognize and label accordingly.

Students will search for information and images of cell parts and organelles. Students will use the search engines and resource available in this web site. Search engines:  www.altavista.com, www.google.com, www.37.com and

Worksheet Cell parts functions (PDF)   and cell parts drawings (PDF) both worksheets in Word

Classroom Activity: Searching for information and images.

Day 5-6

Students will learn to use PowerPoint presentation software.   Teacher will instruct students on how to prepare a PowerPoint slide presentation.  The instruction will be hands on and during class following the Learning PowerPoint slide presentation.  Click here Learning PowerPoint presentation software

Classroom Activity: Searching for information and images.

Final

Culminating Activity

Students will be divided into groups of three students and the group will prepare a PowerPoint slides presentation using the information found in textbooks and Internet. The slide presentation will cover the cell structures and organelles as well as other interesting information about the cell.

Please click here for instruction sheet for PowerPoint slide presentation (Word document)/ (PDF)

(For example)
Days 6-8
Student will do their PowerPoint Presentation in front of the class.

Student will conclude KWL charts
