Introduction

The purpose of this lesson is to have a deeper understanding of the cell.  All living thing is made out of cells.  Cells are the basic unit of life, so it is important to learn about cells.  During the course of this lessons students will learn about structures that make up a cell.  Students will also learn the relationship of the structure with its function. Students will be involved in activities that will help them learn about the cell.  They will explore there previous knowledge of the cell by participating the introductory activity such a pretest and KWL. Their experiences will also involve online research of images and information of the cell structures and organelles that make up the cell.  Students will also learn to use PowerPoint presentation software and prepare a presentation about the structure and function of the parts and organelles of the cell.  They will also present the PowerPoint presentation to the class. .

Subject: Biology
Topic:  Cell: Structure and Function
Grade Level: 10-12

I Standards Addressed

1. Fundamental life processes of plants and animals depend on a variety of chemical reactions that are carried out in specialized areas of the organism's cells. As a basis for understanding this concept the student will know:

a. cells are enclosed within semi-permeable membranes that regulate their interaction with their surroundings.
c. how prokaryotic cells, eukaryotic cells (including those from plants and animals), and viruses differ in complexity and general structure.
e. the role of the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus in secretion of proteins.

Structure and funcion of most cell parts and organelles will be studied to prepare for more detail study of each organelle.

Instructional Objectives
  1. Students will use KWL chart (What I know, What want to learn, what I learned  ) to reflect on what they know about the cell and its parts.
  2. Students will learn the structure and function of the cell structures and organelles by using variety of sources such textbooks, books, Internet, encyclopedia (book and CD)
  3. Students will learn to do searches on internet specially this topic of cell structure and function.
  4. Students will learn to prepare a PowerPoint presentation.
  5. Students will prepare a PowerPoint presentation on cell structure and function and present it to the class.

Student Activities

Go to Student Lesson: Activities

Introductory Activity

Students will take the pretest on cell structure and function. The test will include 50 multiple choice questions on the cell structure and function and it will be administered on the first day.

After the pretest students will participate in filling out KWL chart ( KWL form) on the cell structure and function.  This anticipatory activity will help students reflect on what they know on the subject.  Students may download the chart ( KWL form) or  use two sheets notebook paper to form three columns and also four rows.  Students will hear an explanation of the KWL activity.  Students will answer basically the following questions about the cell:   What do you know about the cell?   What do you want to know about the cell?    and "What did you learn about the cell?" will be fill in at the end of this lesson.

Enabling Activity(ies)

Students will learn to surf the Internet using search engines. Teacher during class will instruct students on the use of search engines to search for information. Students will practice looking for information using the following search engines:  www.altavista.com, www.google.com, www.37.comwww.37.com has 37 search engines available for searching. Students submit keywords into search engine and review pages for relevant and interesting information.  Students can use the resources on this web site.  Go to resources

Students will read chapter 5 Modern Biology (Holt, Rinehart and Winston '93 edition) or other textbooks on cell structure and function.  Students will read and take notes on the structure and function of  cells parts and organelles.  Students will also take notes on the levels of organization.   Students fill in the information requested by the worksheets which can be downloaded ( Worksheet Cell parts functions (PDF) and cell parts drawings (PDF) both worksheets in Word ) if a handout is not available in the classroom.  These forms present a series of statements that student need to answer or fill in and a cell model students need to recognize and label accordingly.

Students will search for information and images of cell parts and organelles. Students will use the search engines and resource available in this web site. Search engines:  www.altavista.com, www.google.com, www.37.com and

Students will learn to use PowerPoint presentation software.   Teacher will instruct students on how to prepare a PowerPoint slide presentation.  The instruction will be hands on and during class following the Learning PowerPoint slide presentation.  Click here Learning PowerPoint presentation software

Worksheet Cell parts functions (PDF)   and cell parts drawings (PDF) both worksheets in Word

Students in culminating activity will study more in depth some of the parts and organelles. Please see next section.

Culminating Activity

Students will be divided into groups of three students and the group will prepare a PowerPoint slides presentation using the information found in textbooks and Internet. The slide presentation will cover the cell structures and organelles as well as other interesting information about the cell.  Please click here for instruction sheet for PowerPoint slide presentation. /( PDF)

Student will complete the KWL chart.
