1.6 Edit and revise manuscripts to improve the meaning and focus of writing by adding, deleting, consolidating, clarifying, and rearranging words and sentences.

Instructional Objectives

1.   Using Kid Pix Studio Deluxe, students will create a multimedia presentation  which effectively combines text and graphics (including original graphics) in an informative and attractive layout determined by scoring a  6 or above on a teacher/student produced rubric.

2.  Students will demonstrate skill in using graphic production tools available in Kid Pix program demonstrated by original illustrations produced and measured by pre and post "treasure hunt" checklist.

3.  Students will increase skills in using pull-down menu features (i.e. save, edit,  font changes) and word processing aspects of this software as determined by teacher observation.

4.  Students will demonstrate skill in summarizing significant events and details of their selected book and will articulate clearly the situations, setting, characters and plots using descriptive language in the limited space available on each slide.

Student Activities

Introductory Activity
Poll students regarding the format usually used to make book reports (handwritten report, oral report, electronically produced, etc.).  Record their responses and tally frequency for each category.   Show demo of a Kid Pix Slide Show (can be teacher/student made) and suggest this option as a method of expanding their sense of narrative from static images to storytelling sequences.

Enabling Activities
1.   Assess student skill with Kid Pix tools using Treasure Hunt format.

2.  Explore 20 Kid Pix tools and  options and give practice with each one.

3.  Explore "Top 10" ways to enhance projects with graphics (include tools, backgrounds, clip art, cutouts, maps, and pull-down menu items).

4.  Students will  select topics and begin planning process for slide show. Students will find use internet search skills to find lists of  Newbery  and ALA award winning books and select book to present.

5.  Introduce Script Worksheet, Storyboard and Rubric to be used for final assessment

6.  Have students view "How To Make A SlideShow" from Kid Pix Resource disk.

7.  Develop plan for slide shows using storyboard and script worksheet. Begin producing slides.  Have "mini shows" where students can demo their successes.

8.  Add sound to productions.  Explore using sounds included in the program, student recorded sound clips, text read alouds, background music, and student recorded text options.

Culminating Activity
Slide shows produced by each student will be presented to the class, to other classes and to parents in an Open House format.
