Now you get to do some actual historical research.  You will examine both primary and secondary documents to learn just what everyday people experienced during the Dust Bowl. Remember, these were actual events that had a dramatic affect on people's lives.  As you do this, ask yourself the all important question, "What would I have experienced if I had been there.

 


Research and Learning

Day 1

In Class

Take the pre-test to see just where you are and what you know about the Dust Bowl.  Turn the pre-test into your instructor.

Study The Report of The Great Plains Drought Area Committee and complete the outline.

Homework 

Complete the study guide and write down any questions you will want to answer tomorrow.

Day 2

In Class


Proceed to the Discovery Channel Site and complete the study guide on the events of Black Sunday.

Go to these two sites, at the Library of Congress, to research the experiences of migrant workers in California.

Use the Research Guide to organize the information you select.

Homework

Complete you summary of Black Sunday and bring it to to class tomorrow.

Days 3-4
In Class

Complete any research you still need and your research notes on the interview and picture you selected as your primary sources.

When you finish your research, start working with your assigned group to design the newspaper you will produce on the Dust Bowl and its effect on people.

Homework

Prepare the article you will be producing for your groups newspaper.  Be sure to proof it for grammar errors as well as historical accuracy.


 


Final Project

Days 4-5
Working with your group, produce a newspaper on the Dust Bowl.  Your paper should include an article on the causes, its effect on ordinary people as well as accounts of ordinary people you found in your research.

The group will turn in their newspaper.

Each student will turn in; the outline of the Report of the Great Plains Area Drought Committee, study guide on Black Sunday, your research guide from the Library of Congress sites and the post-test.

Link to the Dust Bowl Rubric and grade yourself.  Turn in the rubric with your papers.
